Dear City of Houston supporter,
As the days get longer, I find myself recalling the summers of my childhood. Specifically, I remember the sounds of summer – barbecue sizzling, swimming pool splashes, and warm evenings laced with jazz music. Jazz is a part of our memories and part of our American History. As the nation’s 4th largest city, Houston plays an important role in the preservation and development of this musical art form.
On Sunday, August 12, 2018, the Mayor’s Jazz Brunch will take place in the heart of our city at the Hobby Center for The Performing Arts. This event will feature a performance by students from the Summer Jazz Program, a delicious brunch, and of course, more jazz music including a special performance by a national recording jazz artist. I hope that you will consider becoming a sponsor for this event at one of the levels indicated on the next page. Your support of the Mayor’s Jazz Brunch will enable the youth of Houston to further their musical education through scholarships.
The great jazz musician Wynton Marsalis stated that, “Jazz music is America’s past and its potential, summed up and sanctified and accessible to anybody who learns to listen to, feel, and understand it.” In this spirit, together we will accomplish the vision to keep Jazz, America’s original art form alive in Houston.
Sylvester Turner, Mayor
City of Houston
